![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In Bass mode, Callahan's baritone vocals get a bit more low-end boosting than they need, but there's no shortage of crisp high-mid presence to keep things well-defined and prevent the track from sounding muddy. Tracks with less intense bass content, like Bill Callahan's "Drover," sound pleasantly balanced through the Sound Blaster Jam. At moderate volumes and/or with Bass mode deactivated, this isn't an issue, and even with Bass mode off, this track still sounds rather thunderous, with the lows sounding a bit tighter and cleaner. ![]() The bass doesn't distort at top volume with the Bass mode activated, though it does seem to teeter on the edge of distortion on this track. Performance On tracks with powerful sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the Sound Blaster Jam delivers deep bass that is surprisingly strong given the headphones' modest frame. The included red cable is a bit longer than a typical charging cable for this very reason. You can also listen to audio from your PC or Mac through the USB charging cable. Creative estimates that it gets 12 hours of battery life from a full charge, but your results will depend upon on how loudly you play your tracks. The Sound Blaster Jam was easy to pair with an iPhone 5s, and you can also pair NFC-compatible devices by tapping them to the headphones. Reagrdless, if you're looking for a fashion accessory, the Sound Blaster Jam is not for you. It's unfortunate, because the headphones sound and feel pretty great, especially for the price. The Jam logo takes things to the realm of slightly cheesy. From a visual standpoint, no one will ever look at these black plastic headphones and say: "Those look awesome!" Were it not for the word "Jam" scribbled in a font directly imported from the worst part of the '80s, the headphones would merely look bland and institutional. So, from a layout and functionality standpoint, the Sound Blaster Jam is a success. The microphone is also located on the right earpiece. Often, Bluetooth on-ear controls are confusing to operate, since you have to rely on touch, but everything on the Jam is easy to find with your fingers. A "Bass" mode button along the outer rim allows users to boost the bass response with ease. Dedicated Volume controls (that work independently of, not together with, your phone's volume levels) double as track navigation controls, depending on how long you hold them. On the right ear's outer panel, the central button controls Play/Pause, Call Answer/End, Power, and Pairing. Its extremely lightweight build is comfortable over long listening periods, and the simple on-ear controls are laid out in an intuitive manner. If you have more room in your budget for both style and sound quality, the Editors' Choice Jabra Move Wireless ($49.99 at Amazon) offers excellent performance and an attractive design for less than $100.ĭesign If we're talking about simplicity, ease of use, and helpful extra features, the supra-aural (on-ear) Sound Blaster Jam ( at Amazon) is a winner in the design department. If fashion is far less important to you than strong audio performance and low price, read on. Despite its light, thin, exceptionally comfortable frame, the Jam pumps out powerful bass response, and can also deliver a more balanced, nuanced sound with the Bass mode disabled. No one can accuse the budget-friendly Creative Sound Blaster Jam of this sin-this headphone pair looks boring at best, but sounds excellent for its modest $49.99 price. Most of the Bluetooth headphones we test are intended to look cool or eye-catching in some way, sometimes to the (seemingly unintentional) detriment of the audio experience. ![]() ![]() Still, Lightroom plays well at its specific role in the Adobe suite of products and should appeal to any photography buff wanting to wrangle their ever-growing collection.Īdobe’s free trial makes it a simple task try out the light touches and photo management features of their Lightroom appĮasy and effective tool to handle any photographer’s organizational needs using Adobe’s cloud. With co-star Mary J Blige (who’d also lend her soulful pipes to Ghostface Killah’s All That I Got Is You the following year), offering a haunting interpolation of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s 1968 duet You’re All I Need to Get By, Meth pays tribute to the low-maintenance love of his life, a down-since-day-one type who still revs his engines ( “I got a Love Jones for your body and your skin tone/ Five minutes alone, I’m already on the bone”) and who‘s loyal enough to dress demurely if he’s ever incarcerated. Blessed with a husky, blunt-addled voice, agile wordplay and rugged good looks, the MC had spread his street-corner charisma liberally across Enter …, notably on his own, self-titled solo track, and this 1995 hit perfectly harnessed his rugged-yet-smooth appeal. That Meth was the first member of the Wu to release a solo album – 1994’s The Tical – was hardly surprising. quickly rose to the top of the Clan’s catalogue.ģ Method Man ft Mary J Blige – I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By (Razor Sharp remix) Instantly resonant – the Wu’s junior affiliate Shyheim parlayed Deck’s “Life as a shorty shouldn’t be so rough” line into an entire song – C.R.E.A.M. Over a melancholic piano loop from t he Charmels’ 1967 soul ballad As Long As I’ve Got You, Rae’s gruff opening lines – “I grew up on the crime side, the New York Times side / Stayin’ alive was no jive” – set the scene as he and Inspectah Deck describe a harsh youth spent slinging drugs in the high-stakes pursuit of paper. While the titular acronym, which, as Method Man reminds us on the hook, stands for Cash Rules Everything Around Me, was quickly adopted as hip-hop slang for boatloads of dough (not least by the Wu themselves – witness Raekwon admiring the C.R.E.A.M.-making aptitude of Julio Iglesias on Criminology), this poignant study of ’hood capitalism (also from the crew’s debut) is no Puffy-style shopping spree. Released in May 1993 on Loud Records after a DIY pressing the previous year earned the crew a Killa Bee buzz, the Wu’s opening salvo – featured on their instant classic album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) – was the perfect east coast antidote to Dre and Snoop’s crisp G-funk or, as GZA would put it, “the dirtiest thing in sight”. With eight distinctive voices (an incarcerated Masta Killa had yet to sign up) ravaging an RZA track powered by that trusty trumpet glissando from the JB’s The Grunt, quotable lines abound, from Method Man’s playful Irene Cara impression to GZA’s bitter takedown of his unappreciative former label Cold Chillin’ and the wider music industry henceforth “a mountain climber who plays an electric guitar” was the de facto stereotype of the clueless A&R. August 11 was designated Hip Hop Celebration day, in honor of DJ Kool Herc’s “Back to School Jam,” the party credited with birthing the genre. From the second Inspectah Deck attacks his opening verse ( “I smoke on the mic like smokin’ Joe Frazier/ The hellraiser, raising hell with the flavour”), it’s easy to see why the clued-up radio caller at the song’s start is desperate for a repeat fix of the debut single from the mysterious, kung fu-crazy Staten Island crew. ![]() The two co-sponsored a bill – Resolution 331 – that includes “additional recognition of the genre’s fruitful contributions to broader American culture,” per Billboard. ![]() Though hip hop was born on August 11, 1973, at a birthday party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx h/t/ History), November became Hip Hop History Month thanks to Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Congressman Jamaal Bowman (D-NY).
